Narrative

This fragment of a life-sized marble sculpture probably was meant to portray an ancient Olympian athlete. The piece most likely was created during the 2nd century, a time when Romans emulated eariler classical Greek prototypes in art and culture, such as the ancient Greek sculptor Polykleitos referenced in the title of this work. The attention to anatomy and proportion, idealized facial features, slight weight shift, and self-contained pose are hallmarks of the classical Greek ideals of beauty exemplified in this nude male figure.
