Narrative

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Italy's beautiful scenery, antique ruins, and picturesque banditti attracted painters from Europe and the United States. Just before he returned to Düsseldorf after an extended stay in Rome, Andreas Achenbach painted this view of the Italian coast. Hidden in the shadowy foreground are partially buried ruins and minutely detailed renderings of plants. The sunny, broadly painted view of distant fields and sky captures the brilliant atmosphere that was particularly appealing to northern Europeans and Americans. Achenbach's many American pupils adopted his combination of romantic subject matter and realistic detail for views of their homeland.
