Christian Jankowski was born in Göttingen, Germany in 1968 and attended Hamburg's Academy of Fine Arts; he currently lives and works in Berlin and New York. He has been commissiond to produce new works by major institutions, such as Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma (2003); ArtPace, San Antonio, TX (2001); the Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, CT (2000); and Portikus, Frankfurt (1998). Additionally, solo exhibitions of his work have been mounted at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2003); Washington University Gallery of Art, St. Louis (2002); Aspen Art Museum (2002); Swiss Institute, New York (2001); De Appel Foundation, Amsterdam (2000); and Kölnicher Kunstverein, Cologne (1999). His works have also been included in group shows at institutions such as Museum of Contemporary Arts, Houston (2004); Serpentine Gallery, London (2004); Deictorhallen, Hamburg (2002), Apexart, New York (2001); Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (2001); Art Museum Wolfsburg (2001); Hamburger Bahnhof (2000); a the Institutte of Contemporary Art, London (2000); he has participated in numerous important survey exhibitions such as the Tirana Biennial (2002), Whitney Biennial (2002); the 2nd Berlin Biennale (2001); and 48th Biennale di Venezia (1999). Texts about his work have been published recently in Frieze>, Flash Art International, Artforum, and Tema Celeste, and in numerous exhibition catalogues.
