Narrative

Cutline of image published in New Pittsburgh Courier newspaper, September 20, 1969, pg. 9, reads, "As Thousands March - With thousands of marchers in the background, the peaceful demonstration that took place in Pittsburgh Monday winds its way down Centre Avenue into the downtown section of the city. The show of black and white unity in the city gave support to Black Coalition leaders who are demanding that job discrimination in the union construction sit[e]s be ended."

Artist Bio

Teenie Harris photographed for the Pittsburgh Courier for almost 40 years, documenting life in the African-American community. His approximately 70,000 negatives, recently acquired by the museum, form one of the richest-known archives of Black life in an American city from the 1930s to the 1970s.
