The cast—one of the largest ever produced—was sent in 1906 to Pittsburgh in 200 crates. The centerpiece of the museum’s grand Hall of Architecture is the monumental cast of the western facade of the church of St. Gilles, located in the south of France. The cast—one of the largest ever produced—was sent in 1906 to Pittsburgh in 200 crates. This detailed drawing was one of many used by the skilled laborers who assembled the cast onsite in the Hall of Architecture. On the right side of the drawing is the structural support system, while the left side shows details marked with dashed lines that indicate the various sections to be pieced. This drawing offers a unique look at the sheer scale of Andrew Carnegie’s vision for the Hall of Architecture, revealing the skill and effort that went into erecting the massive casts. While it was intended to be informative and instructional, it is also a beautiful object, with much care taken in the line, shading, and lettering.
