Tina Barney photographs her family and close friends who are part of the privileged New York and New England culture of her birth. In Musical Chairs, we find a group of children and adults enjoying leisure time at the beach. "Did people in the East Coast of America stand differently, walk differently, put their hands in the pockets differently, than people in other parts of America?" she wonders in the introduction to her book Theatre of Manners. Viewers of Barney's ultra-large print are invited to witness a world that may be very different from our own.
