(Spanish, b. 1934) Paco Rabanne, the haute couture fashion designer, has used unusual materials throughout his career. From the 1960s, Rabanne wanted to create a "fantastic revolution conducted with new materials", in much the same way that architecture was turning away from stone, painting from canvas, or sculpture from marble. Fabric, he believed, was not the only material suitable for clothing. He abandoned his needle and thread in favor of pliers and a blowtorch.
