(Austrian, 1841-1918)
Otto Wagner, a Viennese architect, designer, and early pioneer of the 20th-century modern movement, was among the first to use aluminum in a totally modern context. Selected for its durability and ease of maintenance in his architectural designs, aluminum was also Wagner’s choice of material to get beyond the historicism of 19th-century Viennese architecture. For Wagner, aluminum was not just a practical choice, but the modern choice.
