Architect and designer, Marcel Breuer, is perhaps the most influential modernist furniture designer of the 20th century. He advocated a machine made look using modern materials in a modern way. In the 1920s and 30s, he experimented with several new materials for furniture, including tubular steel, plywood, and aluminum. His aluminum designs, which all used strap or band construction, date from 1932.
