Sculptors experimenting with new metals and casting techniques at the end of the 19th century discovered aluminum was easier to cast than bronze. Its resistance to corrosion made it well-suited for outdoor sculpture. While it was no longer a precious metal, it was still considered a novelty and something suitable for tomb sculptures or commemorative busts.
