After WWII, aluminum yarns were developed, such as Lurex, which is foil sandwiched between layers of plastic and cut into thin strips. As the yarns became more affordable, its use was extended to bathing suits and cocktail dresses. Contemporary clothing designers today, such as Issey Miyaki and Paco Rabanne use aluminum foil and disks in haute couture dresses. Aluminum is also used for industrial purposes, such as protective suits for firefighters and steelworkers.
