Aluminum, during its 150 year history, has taken on many roles for many reasons. Once considered "a solution without a problem," aluminum had difficulty in its early years finding a sustainable market. Aluminum was readily available and inexpensive to extract by 1900, but answered no immediate consumer or industrial need. Since the 19th century, metallurgists, manufacturers, designers, and consumers have experimented with the metal’s characteristics and properties, discovering its great versatility and creating new applications for aluminum. Today, aluminum is used in everything from jewelry to jets!
