The story of aluminum in Pittsburgh began when Charles Martin Hall of Ohio sold his patents to a group of Pittsburgh metallurgists and entrepreneurs. They established their business, now Alcoa, and needed to find markets for the metal. Another new and rapidly expanding market was the electricity industry. By 1900, half of the company’s sales come from producing aluminum ore as a substitute for copper in high-voltage power lines. |
