In the 1950s, Pittsburgh became a leader in the design field through the Alcoa Forecast Program. The program was an astute marketing strategy to stimulate interest in aluminum by commissioning top designers to find innovative uses for the metal. Between 1956 and 1960, Alcoa commissioned about 20 top designers to produce for an advertising campaign. The list of designers reads like a veritable "Who’s Who" of American design.
