By 1855, the French chemist Henri St-Claire Deville had successfully extracted aluminum from the earth and obtained sufficient quantities to produce ingots and small objects. Although the price of aluminum fell below silver by the early 1860s, it remained expensive. Consequently, objects that were made from chemically produced aluminum were usually small, and often combined with more precious materials.
