By the 1930s, many influential designers on both sides of the Atlantic were drawn to relatively new industrial materials such as Bakelite and aluminum to express their vision of the contemporary world. They chose and used these new materials based on their innate properties, as well as their association with the modern. They did not disguise the materials they selected. In the case of aluminum, for example, they celebrated its metallic character.
