The 1960s, the decade of the hippy, youth culture and Pop Art, saw aluminum, along with plastic, invading new territories, such as "haute couture." Fashion designer Paco Rabanne abandoned his needle and thread for pliers and a blowtorch. Mass consumerism flourished, buoyed along by the growing middle classes. Along with this consumer growth, civil aviation expanded, and new airports required practical seating. The Tandem Sling Seating, designed in 1962 by Charles and Ray Eames, was an innovative solution that continues in production today.
