The 19th century was a period of tremendous technological innovation. Many of these new inventions were interrelated, such as the simultaneous but independent discoveries by Charles Martin Hall and Paul Heroult of an electrical process for producing aluminum. Hall and Heroult’s discoveries led to the establishment of economically viable aluminum industries in both America and Europe by the early 1890s.
