Mixed Doubles
August 16 – October 9, 2005

Mixed Doubles pairs works from the Carnegie Museum of Art's collection of canonical video works from the 1970s and 1980s with new moving image works by emerging national and international artists. Linked thematically, these juxtapositions allow poetic and formal connections to be drawn between works of different generations that share similar impulses in subject matter, technological innovation, and aesthetic investigation. Five pairs of works will be shown in succession; this third installment brings together the work of Nam June Paik and Omer Fast, screening through October 9. Future pairings of Mixed Doubles are scheduled for October and December.

On Paper III: Selections from the Permanent Collection
May 21 – October 9, 2005

Inexpensive, widely available, pliable yet resilient, paper inspires artists and doodlers alike—to radically different results. From photographs to paintings, drawings to various modes of printmaking, paper lends itself well to most kinds of image-making. This exhibition presents some 50 recently acquired works of art on paper that represent the vitality of paper as an artistic medium. A representative sample culled from more than 4,500 works on paper in the museum's collection, this exhibition spans the 1940s to the present—our chronological definition of contemporary art.
