Many works of art on display in the Carnegie International operate as metaphors for shared human experiences. Robert Breer's three-minute animation, What Goes Up, begins with airplanes climbing into the sky and continues with flashes of life lived to its fullest–kids playing in a yard, a dog barking, leaves fluttering. Toward the end of the film, the airplanes begin to descend, autumn leaves fall to the ground, and a train derails from its track, implying that what goes up, must come down and serving as a metaphor for human life. Along with Breer, installation artist Senga Nengudi works in the realm of metaphor. Her installations of stretched, knotted pantyhose inspired some viewers to see them as symbolic of the experiences of women, whose bodies are "stretched" through childbirth and "pulled" in many directions throughout life. Likewise, Nengudi's sand paintings, inspired by the religious practices of African, Asian, and Native American cultures, exist only temporarily and suggest, among other things, the impermanence of life.
