The Dow Jones Industrial Average, Suicide, and the Seagull Factor

San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is a major attraction for photo enthusiasts, and also for people with suicidal tendencies. In 1993 the Bureau of Inverse Technology undertook the assignment of documenting falls at this site. The resulting video fails to record the suicidal act, but the formal traces which it captures, nonetheless prompt questions about surveillance and subjectivity which span the distance between reality and fiction. Against current exercises in abjection which attempt to return to the real, this film contests both poles of today's predominant ideological antagonism: the reduction of history to a multitude of discourses, and its opposite, the reference to some non-historical ground.
