Scholarships are available through the generosity of the Scaife Family Foundation. Teachers earn ACT 48 hours for participation in all adult programs and classes. Thursday, December 10
Did you ever wonder where paints get their vibrant colors? Museum of Natural History docent and geology specialist Harlan Clare and artist educator Constance Merriman lead an exploration in the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems of the role of minerals as paint colorants. After lunch, chief conservator Ellen Baxter takes to the art galleries to discuss the mineral compositions used to color Renaissance egg tempera and oil paint, while Merriman demonstrates in the studio how minerals are made into a variety of paint mixtures.

Begin with a docent-led gallery discussion comparing furniture forms and materials, ranging from historical styles to contemporary designs. After lunch, join Michael Belman, objects conservator, for a look at preserving furniture for museum display or as functional objects in public and residential spaces.

Begin with a guided tour of Gods, Love, and War: Tapestries and Prints from the Collection with guest curator Dr. Richard Simmons and Lucy Stewart, assistant curator of education. After lunch, Constance Merriman demonstrates tapestry design, the coloring of threads from plants, and weaving techniques on a tapestry loom.
Thursday, March 25
Local collectors Edward and Kathryn Friedman discuss the Arts and Crafts movement and the furniture of Gustav Stickley, a contemporary of Charles Rohlfs. After lunch, tour the exhibition The Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs with Jason Busch, The Alan G. and Jane A. Lehman Curator of Decorative Arts.
Thursday, April 15
What is it that defines a building as a home? Join Tracy Myers, curator of architecture, for a lecture on different architectural “takes” on the idea of a home, from the traditional to contemporary innovations. After lunch, continue your exploration with Myers in the exhibition Imagining Home: Selections from the Heinz Architectural Center.

If you missed that art history class in college, this course is for you. Treat yourself to an enjoyable talk each week focusing on high points of art history with a particular emphasis on strengths in the museum’s collection. Travel through art from the ancient world to the French Impressionist era to the present, and have your questions answered along the way. The course is also the first step in applying to the museum’s docent training program. Scholarships are available. Information about recommended textbook provided at registration.
