Art and Architecture Camp
Ages 4–5 and 6–7

Around the World
June 23–27, 9:00–11:30 a.m.
July 14–18, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

Get set to tour the world in just five days! Take a "grand tour" through the art of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas in the museum's collection and the Carnegie International exhibition. Make a passport to record your travels and turn your pictures into art postcards to send home. Create art souvenirs and your own decorated suitcase to carry it all! Ages 4–5 and Ages 6–7

Art Caper
June 16–20, 9:00–11:30 a.m.
July 28–Aug. 1, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

Join us for an art caper?a work of art is misplaced, and you get to be the detective! Uncover clues on scavenger hunts through the galleries. Design detective gear, including spyglasses and museum maps. Create your own "masterpiece" to be displayed until the missing artwork is found. Ages 4–5 and Ages 6–7

Art Cat's Puppet Show
July 7–11, 12:30–3:00 p.m.
Aug. 11–15, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

Do you like to make up stories and act them out with puppets? Join Art Cat, the museum's furriendly mascot, for a "fantastic" puppet show! Create multi-media puppets of characters inspired by your imagination, your favorite painting, or storybook. Construct the scenery and props, and make invitations for your family to watch our Friday show. Ages 4–5 and Ages 6–7

Art Olympics
Aug. 11–15, 12:30–3:00 p.m.

Become an art athlete just in time for the 2008 Summer Olympics! Test your endurance in this art pentathlon, as you draw, paint, print, sculpt, and collage. Team up in art relays and make your own Art Olympics medals. Create a clay figure of an athlete in action inspired by athletes in art?swimmers, archers, and even a discus thrower?in the museum's paintings and sculptures. Ages 6–7

Block Party
Aug. 4–8, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

Team up with your fellow campers to create a kid-sized neighborhood with houses and shops; add a park and even a playground. Start with streets and sidewalks, then go green with flowers and trees. Paint the town red or any color you choose! Be neighborly, and invite your family to a fun-filled "block party" at the end of the week. Ages 4–5

Bridge Builders
July 21–25, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

Bridges of all sizes and shapes are everywhere. Look closely, sketch, and make models of the bridges you find in artworks in the galleries. Explore what bridges are made of and how they are built. Experiment with your own designs to span open spaces, support heavy loads, and fit with the natural landscape. Ages 6–7

Construction Junction
July 14–18, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

It's all about building materials! From stones to steel, learn about the ordinary and extraordinary materials used in buildings today. Sketch houses of brick and skyscrapers of glass. Build a miniature stone arch and a wooden truss. With so many materials to use, the design possibilities are endless! Ages 6–7

Dance Your "Art" Out
Aug. 4–8, 9:00–3:00 p.m.

Five, six, seven, eight! Get ready to dance your "art" out. Have fun stepping, stomping, twirling, and jumping your way to a performance for your family and friends on Friday. Spend half the day with a dance teacher learning the moves, and the other half with an art teacher creating some awesome costumes and spectacular scenery to set the stage for your artful performance. Ages 6–7; (full-day)

Finders Keepers
June 23–27, 9:00–11:30am

Where do artists find their inspiration? Anywhere and everywhere! Go on a scavenger hunt through the galleries, gathering ideas and inspiration for your own paintings and collages. Bring in favorite everyday items from home or draw from our bag of tricks to create one-of-a-kind artworks that only you could dream up. Ages 4–5

Go Wild: Art on Safari
July 7–11, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

Take off on an art safari through the Museums of Art and Natural History. Make binoculars and create safari sketchbooks to track wild animals in works of art and in museum displays. Transform your memories and drawings of your favorite wild animals into sculptures that roar with color and texture. Create a diorama for their habitat, too! Ages 4–5 and Ages 6–7

House of Style
June 30–July 3, 12:30–3:00 p.m.

Go on a design scavenger hunt searching the museum for houses that fascinate you in paintings, drawings, and architectural models. Along the way, collect ideas for building ornament from sturdy columns to fancy rooflines. Create a house that reflects your personal style, then move inside with designs for furniture in your favorite room! Ages 6–7

Imagination Installation
June 16–20, 12:30–3:00 p.m.

Artists sometimes create room-sized art that you can walk through. Design and construct an imaginary world of your own complete with characters and their surroundings. Team up with classmates to make large-scale "imagination installations" that fill the studio. At the end of the week, invite your family to experience your art environment. Ages 6–7

Kid Stuff
July 7–11, 9:00–11:30 a.m.
July 26–Aug. 1, 12:30–3:00 p.m.

This class is all about you and your favorite things. See works by artists who made kids their subjects in paintings in the museum. Create pictures of yourself and new friends you make in class. Bring your favorite stuffed animals, toys, or games to "show and tell," and to use as arrangements for still life paintings. Listen to favorite storybooks read aloud and create your own storybook art. Make art with materials that you choose to reflect you and your interests. Ages 4–5 and Ages 6–7

Make a Mess
June 16–20, 9:00–11:30am
July 14–18, 12:30–3:00 p.m.

Have some fun making art with all sorts of messy materials that you don't get to use at home. Create with clay, construct collages, and play with paint and paper-mache. Get a grip on textures in your very own mix of messy materials. Ages 4–5 and Ages 6–7

Move It!
July 21–25, 12:30–3:00 p.m.

Art doesn't sit still and neither do you! See sculpture that moves with the wind outside or glides to an indoor breeze. Check out moving images in film and video animation. Look at lines that leap off paintings and pack a punch. Make your own moveable two-dimensional and three-dimensional art that twists and turns, zigs and zags. Wrap yourself up in art-to-wear that moves with you. Ages 6–7

Once Upon a Time

Have you ever heard that a picture's worth a thousand words? Images in paintings tell stories, too? some that the artist intended and some that you discover for yourself. Uncover clues that artists use to suggest what's going on. Bring in your favorite storybook to share and tell your own tales. Create your own characters; invent and illustrate your story from beginning to end. Ages 4–5 and Ages 6–7

Our Town
Aug. 11–15, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

What's around town? From Main Street to your street, design and construct the kinds of buildings that every town needs. Explore the things that make towns unique and create your own town identity. Then create a map showing the buildings you've made and the points of interest no visitor should miss! Ages 6–7

Time Travel
June 30-July 3, 9:00–11:30 a.m.

Have you ever wished you could go back in time? Design and build a time machine that takes you on a blast to the past or forward into the future. See art from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and India on your journey. Then fast forward to the Middle Ages or historic Pittsburgh. Make sketches along the way that you can transform into paintings or sculpture when you return to the present. Create a mixed-media time capsule of your favorite things to tell people in the future all about your moment in time. Ages 6–7

Tree Huggers
June 23–27, 12:30–3:00 p.m.

Who says art doesn't grow on trees? Branch out as you make art fit for a tree. Tap into textures as you make prints from leaves, bark, acorns, and apples. Paint with a branch instead of a brush, build a bird's nest, and team up to make a "tree house" hideout just for kids. Ages 6–7
