Ordering Digital Images for Publication

rightsrepro1Digital and print images from the collections of Carnegie Museum of Art are available for research and publication. Permission for use of Carnegie Museum of Art’s images can be requested through the rights and reproductions section of our publications department. For digital files, see the list below to get started. Or to order your own prints, see our Ordering Prints page. You can also place orders for digital images and prints from the Teenie Harris Archive. Sorry, we cannot process orders for images over the phone.

How do I begin?
All requests for photographs and permissions must be submitted in writing to our Rights and Reproductions department. You may either fill out the online order form or submit a letter to this office (see below for contact info). Please describe the image you are requesting by name, artist, and accession number, if known.

In addition, please be specific on the order form about the purposes for which the image will be used: study, in book text, cover art for a publication, scholarly journal, etc. For publications, include the publisher’s name and address, title and author, publication date, print run, and distribution.

Carnegie Museum of Art does not hold copyright for most images in the collection. Copyright clearance must be obtained by the applicant.

What happens next?
You will receive a form reflecting the cost for the photographic materials that you have requested and any applicable reproduction fees. This is your invoice and your contract with the museum. By signing and returning this form with payment, you indicate that you understand and agree to the terms of the contract and to the museum’s general conditions for reproduction.

Payment is required before receiving images. Checks must be in U.S. dollars and made payable to Carnegie Museum of Art. Credit cards are also accepted (MasterCard or Visa only), or you may pay by wire transfer, for an additional fee. Upon receipt of payment and the signed contract, you will receive the photographic materials with a letter of permission.

What are your fees?
See our general image fees for each usage. Costs may vary depending on quantities and usage. Please note that reproduction fees are in addition to the initial order fee for digital files.

How long will it take for my order to be processed?
Please allow a minimum of 3–4 weeks processing time with regular service. Rush service within two weeks is available for most orders, for an additional fee.

Are photographs of the entire collection available for purchase?
While a significant portion of the museum’s collection has been photographed, there are times when images are not readily available. If imaging is needed, you will be notified and given the option to request new photography. New photography generally takes between six and eight weeks to complete and prepayment is required. The museum reserves the right to cancel requests for new photography, but an appropriate explanation and full refund will be given. In some cases, photographic prints are not available due to copyright.

Note: Permission to reproduce and the image fees cover only the specific use detailed in the application. Any and all reprints, further editions, re-use of the printing plates, or additional use of any kind must be preceded by a new application and is not covered by the original fee or permission to reproduce. You will receive more specific details upon ordering digital files.
