Saturday Art Classes for Kids: Ages 5–10

Your kid loves to create art. You’ve come to the right place! Saturday Art Classes for Kids nurtures creative thinking, thoughtful observation, and perseverance towards achieving goals. With a variety of themes and practices, these classes take place over 4 consecutive Saturdays. Expect the unexpected! We encourage experimentation: our imaginative exercises work toward inventive results.
 

WINTER 2016 CLASSES 

Art Cat's Kitchen (For ages 5–7)
January 30–February 20

Art Cat is having fun with food and kitchen gadgets, but this food isn't edible-it's art! Make your own apron to wear while creating sculptures, still-lives, and more. Get inspired by food-themed art in the museum's collection, as well as a Modernist refrigerator, blender, pots, and pans in Silver to Steel: The Modern Designs of Peter Muller-Munk.

Everyday Materials, Everyday Life (For ages 8–10)

Art is all around you, in clothes, clocks, buildings, radios, phones and furniture. Did you know that objects like blenders and chairs are in the museum's galleries? See works of art made from everyday materials like neon, aluminum, and fabric. Transform everyday objects into mixed media sculpture. Consider object design and invent your dream product.

Fun with Clay (For ages 8–10)

Get your hands messy as you sculpt with wet clay. Learn hand-building techniques and try out the potter's wheel. Make functional vessels and imaginative sculptures and bring them to life with colorful glazes. Projects will be fired and available for pick up 3-4 weeks later. 
 

Cast Away (For ages 8–10)

The life-sized sculptures in the museum's Halls of Architecture and Sculpture are really plaster casts of works from the past. Make molds of your own sculptures and cast them in plaster. Think creatively about how to present or document your finished casts.

 

Masters of Disguise (For ages 5–7)

Create costumes and disguises inspired by artworks in the museum's collection. Blend into your surroundings and find clues in the galleries to solve a museum mystery.

For some artists, a messy studio is a sign of creativity. Bring a smock and have some fun making art with gooey papier maché and drippy paint. Make abstract compositions and free-standing sculptures. Look for inspiration in the galleries and draw your favorite artworks in your sketchbook.
