ONLINE COLLECTION SEARCH TIPS

Word search
Use the Search by menu. You can search by all fields

or you can narrow your search by Title, Creator Name, or Medium.

In the text box to the right of the Search by menu, enter words likely to be found in those fields, for example:
  • [Title] portrait, chair, street, store, view
  • [Creator] Rembrandt, van Gogh, Cassatt, Monet, Pissarro;
  • [Medium] oil, watercolor, gouache, wood, porcelain, paper, ink, silver
Enter only whole words; the search engine does not recognize partial words or abbreviations. The search engine is not particular about upper- or lowercase, or punctuation. Connecting words, such as an, of, to, from, etc. are ignored.

The search engine is very particular about spelling. If the word you enter does not exactly match a word in the database record(s), you will not get the results you expect. For example, if you enter Cassat as a creator, your results (if any) will not include records in which Mary Cassatt is the creator, because the term you entered is missing the second "t " in the creator's last name.

You can enter any number of words in the text box. The search engine interprets multiple-word queries as "AND" queries. Only records containing all of the words in the selected field(s) will be returned.

Search Options
Choose whether to search the General CMA collection (paintings, sculpture, prints, decorative arts, etc.) or the Teenie Harris Archive collection (black-and-white photographic images) or both.

Date Search
There are four ways to search by Specified Year.

Please note that all date queries are approximate. The results will include records that exactly match the date(s) you entered, as well as records whose dates overlap or are similar to the date(s) you entered.

Approximate Date: Enter a date in the first text box, then click search.

Records with similar or overlapping dates will be returned. For example, if you enter 1895, you will get records with that date, and also such dates as: c. 1895, c. 1897, 1890–1910, late 19th century, etc.

Before: Enter a date in the first text box. Records with dates before that approximate date will be returned.

After: Enter a date in the first text box. Records with dates after that approximate date will be returned.

Between: This selection allows you to search by date range. Enter a beginning date in the first box and an end date in the second box.

The database will return records of items whose dates overlap with any part of the range you entered. For example, a search with a range of 1890 to 1910 might return works with any of the following dates: 19th century, 20th century, 18th–20th century, 1880–1920, etc., as well as dates like 1892, c. 1899, etc.

Word search combined with date search
You can search by words and dates at the same time. The search engine will interpret these as "AND" queries, so both conditions must be fulfilled to return a record. A search for the word “Portrait” in the Title field, and a date of after 1900, will only return records with “Portrait” in the title AND a date after 1900.

Images only
Check the box Only show items with images to exclude records that do not have images.

Search within results
After you execute a query, your results will appear as a list. If you wish, you may narrow this list further by performing an additional word search within the results. In the Search Results box, choose the scope of your search, then enter a word or words in the text box. You may perform as many additional searches as you wish.
